Case studies
Politics International has
worked in the past with clients on the full range of public affairs
services. The following are a taste of how we have helped clients
in the past.
Service: Monitoring
Sector: Education
Our client sells educational services
to Government. We provide a regular weekly monitoring report containing
information from a variety of Government sources. The reports
highlighted parliamentary questions which gave the client pre-warning
about possible changes in Government policy in their area. The
client was able to engage in the political process at an early
stage, enabling them to position themselves to take advantage
of new commercial opportunities with Government. The client subsequently
engaged PI to provide a broader public affairs contract.
We researched and analysed key
elements of emerging government policy, enabling a leading house
builder to re-align its strategy to meet government expectations
and contribute to policy development, mitigating areas of potential
difficulty.
We worked with a leading organisation
representing the interests of older people to campaign for legislation
banning age discrimination.
We surveyed MPs, MSPs, AMs and
MEPs for their views on policy development and compiled the results
into a contact management data-base for referral in the later
stages of the campaign.
This allowed the client to
identify and record sympathetic opinion formers for future targeting.
Our client needed to defend itself
against a committee that had embarked on a hostile and potentially
damaging enquiry. We helped draft written submissions setting
out the positive side of their case and coached them intensively
to deal effectively with sustained and probing questions.
The committee subsequently reported
the key points they wanted to convey and removed the sting of
the enquiry.
We helped this client develop a
Public Finance Initiative business case for a service-wide public
sector IT messaging service, enabling significant commercial benefits
to be realised while saving some £100 million of public spending.
A sector of the waste management
industry faced massive public and political opposition.
Over a five year period we
reversed the negative perception and enabled them to build positive
relationships at all levels of government. Incineration is now
a key process in the national strategy towards more sustainable
waste management.
We developed and implemented a
contact management programme for representatives of the wholesale
trade to amend Packaging Waste Regulation.
This enabled the client to give
oral evidence to the Government Advisory Body reviewing the Regulations,
solved wholesaler's problems and ensured government, retail and
distributive trade support. As a result the wholesaler obligation
in the Regulations was removed, significantly reducing cost burdens.
Our client faced major planning
barriers to their expansion programme. We helped them run a campaign
designed to enhance their corporate image which emphasised the
environmental initiatives they had taken and their commitment
to the communities in which they operate.
We advised a consortium that bid successfully
for a billion pound transport infrastructure project. This included
providing information and intelligence on the technical and political
priorities in the assessment of bids; advising on the development
of the bid and negotiation strategy; and developing and implementing
a widely based campaign to secure political and other stakeholder
support for core components of the bid strategy.
We advised our client on its submissions
to the Competition Commission inquiry into mobile phone pricing,
as well as the broader public policy environment affecting the
sector, such as the forthcoming round of licences for the third
generation technology.
We worked closely with a Portuguese
financial institution and its corporate advisors, providing intelligence
and strategy on EU merger and infringement proceedings, and helping
them to influence the European debate on financial services regulation.
Our client took an active interest
in a Bill which provided for local authorities to move away from
compulsory competitive tendering and towards a best value regime.
We provided regular briefings as the Bill progressed and helped
our client formulate a cohesive response which involved drafting
new amendments to the Bill, and arranging briefing meetings with
key MPs and Peers. As a result, our client was able to raise awareness
of issues of concern, and gained important clarification in areas
where anomalies existed.
We helped the company respond to
a hostile commercial and city environment by building strategic
alliances with third parties, message development and briefing
key audiences during UK and EU authority scrutiny.
Following a major re-launch of
their corporate image, our client wanted to reinforce their new
branding with key political audiences at the major party conferences.
We helped them to strategically plan an effective approach including
organising fringe events, receptions and stands. This involved
co-ordinating visits by key politicians, including the Prime Minister,
other Party Leaders and Ministers. We also provided advice on
the theme, including the design of the stand. Our conference support
services also includes administration including arranging accommodation,
transport, and organising conference passes.
A client was in the process of
lodging a highly controversial planning application.
We helped them undertake an extensive
community consultation exercise, including in-depth stakeholder
dialogue. This minimised local concern, reassured opposition and
made it much easier to negotiate a favourable outcome.
Service: Media
relations
Sector: Waste management
Our client faced a hostile environment
when its plans to implement a waste management strategy were announced.
We researched and targeted key
contacts within the local media and initiated a mechanism for
tracking issues as they developed. By developing effective media
relations, and ensuring that key messages responded to local concerns,
a more positive perception of both the client and the project
was achieved.
Our client wanted to review its
marketing strategy over a three year period for a large multi-million
pound procurement strategy. We supplied a detailed analysis of
future trends in Government policy and identified key areas that
they needed to address. This has helped to improve their competitive
position and also informed their investment decision-making and
relations with their partner companies.
We helped convenience store
operators campaign to influence food safety policy development.
We drafted formal submissions to the government's policy development
process and lobbied to inform the shape of the Food Standards
Agency. On abandoning the levy, the Agriculture Minster cited
the small retailer's campaign. Our work represented a cost saving
of £100 for every business.
