Politics Explained:

What:  Politics Explained is a modular course designed to equip you with the skills required in dealing with any of these situation and more.  It goes beyond simple theoretical explanations of the institutions and processes of government to explain how public affairs professionals engage in the full range of communications opportunities available and how you can utilise these skills in achieving your organisations goals and objectives. 

Who:  The course will benefit many individuals including PR/communications practitioners; marketing staff; public affairs/communications support staff; those new to public affairs or simply those interested in learning more about public affairs.  Sessions can be mixed and matched to develop a unique programme for your precise needs.

How:  Delivered by professional public affairs consultants, each module includes explanation of how the processes work in reality, advice on the most effective style of engagement; and real life examples to place the information into a practical context.  Class sizes are limited to a maximum of 16.

Bespoke courses: Tailored precisely to the information and time requirements of the client we develop and deliver bespoke training courses on all aspects of public affairs to classes ranging from an individual upwards. Courses may be issue, sector or organisation specific and are delivered by experienced senior consultants.

Prices start from £500 for a half day session.

Politics Explained Course Modules

Module 1:

Public affairs: an overview –10 May 2007

Objective: Introducing key public affairs activities and tools and how they fit together in the development of a public affairs strategy.

A key foundation in the development of skills for working with government, this module outlines the types of activities undertaken by public affairs practitioners, the purpose of their work, the basic tools and resources employed and how the outputs influence the achievement of organisational objectives.

Module 2:

The policy making process – 17 May 2007

Objective: To explain the theory and practice of the policy-making process from conception of an idea through to final implementation; and how best to engage with these processes.

This module explores the mechanisms of policy development and the sources from which policy ideas emerge, focusing on the positive identification of opportunities to engage and shape the outputs and outcomes. 

Module 3:

Parliamentary procedures and the legislative process – 24 May 2007

Objective: To explain the theory and practice of the legislative process and the variety of opportunities to engage with and influence the outcomes. 

Explaining the numerous tools and stages which form the legislative process, this session focuses on the parliamentary processes with which public affairs professionals most often come into contact and how best to engage with these.

Module 4:

Local, regional and devolved government – 07 June 2007

Objective: To explain the structure, function, processes and importance of government operating outside of Westminster. 

A look beyond the auspices of Westminster to the operation of government at the local, regional and devolved levels.  This session explores the historical development of the various bodies and considers how this may evolve in the future.  This is followed by an examination of the various procedures and processes employed by the institutions and how public affairs professionals make use of these. 

Module 5:

Europe explained – 14 June 2007

Objective: To understand how EU policy develops and how to effectively engage with the processes.

This module looks at the importance of EU level activities, examines the institutions and processes in action, how Europe influences the policy making process in the UK and how public affairs professionals can best engage at the European level.

Module 6:

Party politics and public affairs –
21 June 2007

Objective: To understand the ideology of the major political parties, how they develop policy ideas and how this can be utilised in your public affairs strategy.

This session looks at the ideological foundations of the major parties, the key personalities and players and how party politics can impact on the environment in which policy is developed.  These topics are examined with a focus on when and how party politics can be utilised as part of a successful public affairs strategy and how the machinations of the various parties can be used in planning long term strategies. 

Module 7:

Crisis management and public affairs – 28 June 2007

Objective: To understand the role of public affairs in crisis prevention and management.

This session examines the range of ways in which public affairs can manage, minimise, contain and even prevent a crisis situation.  Highlighting real life case studies and the best practice guidance which can be drawn from them. the session looks at an area in which first hand experience can be rare.  It includes advice on developing a strategy and the role of public affairs in dealing with events extending beyond the scope of engaging with government and its processes.
